Library Collections

COLLECTIONS


UBD Library builds its collection based on the teaching, learning and research needs of the university. There are over 600,000 items in print and electronic formats. The majority of the collection are in English, and about 20 percent are in Malay and the rest are in other languages.

Circulating materials


  • The main collection that consists of general and short term loan collections. These include the Business Collection and the Islamic Collection, located on separate wings of the library, and also some multimedia materials.
  • The Brunei Studies and special collections (Borneo, and UBD publications) lend out the second and extra copies of each title. The first copies are for reference use only, which is an effort for the library to preserve the local collection.

Non-circulating materials


  • Reference collections. Some reference collection are available online.
  • Journals. Some journals are accessible online while the rest are available in print, including back issues
  • All first copies of Brunei Studies collections, collections from Borneo and UBD publications. Some had been digitized for easy access.

Special In-House Use materials


  • Theses, past year examination papers, recent and back issues of local newspapers, rare books and one copy of each title of Brunei Studies collection. An Item Usage Form must be completed and submitted with UBD card or individual ID for each usage.
  • Manuscripts. A written permission is required to use them. Certain conditions apply.
  • All reference collections, printed journals and some multimedia materials that do not circulate.

The Special Collections are kept at the Brunei Studies Collection, which is home to the library's rare books, manuscripts, and the University publications and archives. Some of them had been selected and digitized for the Bruneiana Digital Collections. As of 2016, UBD Library has created 94 digitized collections that are accessible online, with items ranging from local and Borneo collections, UBD publications and past year exam papers, rare books, and manuscripts.
